This was an excellent book; Montana Ash has done it again! This book was very fast-paced, but had a good plot.Dex (is what Max has named him especially as she thinks of him as a friend) is a Chade who has helped Max on many occasions even though he does also take some of her vitality when he sees her. Max believes that some Chades can be rehabilitated; Dex is one of those that she's sure she can help.
After not seeing Dex for almost a year, he shows up & almost drains her of her vitality & when he does that he's almost feels "human" again & even gets some bodily functions again. He winds up using one of those functions with Cali (she's part of Max's order & has 2 days of leave) as Cali uses her free time for a 1 night stand as she leaves before he wakes up. Cali through Max doesn't see him until Max shows her Order why she thinks that some Chades can be rehabilitated (Max shares her memories of Dex as he has helped her out before she met her Order). But, Cali isn't the only 1 in her Order that recognizes Dex as Darius is Dex's brother; Cali doesn't say anything about knowing Dex too but Max already knows (& she lets Cali know that she knows in a very surprising way).
This story goes into some of Dex's background before he became a Chade & how he became one is just touched on lightly; it's also about Darius & Dex's reconciliation & Dex's & Cali's relationship. Along with what Max "knows" & "sees" & she "knows" about a lot of stuff that coming in the future.
This book is part of a series & shouldn't be read as a standalone unless you want to be scratching your head while wondering what's going on; it's better to read the 1st book in this series to follow what is going on in this book.
Finally, I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I enjoyed this book so much. It was totally unexpected. Cali and Dex is totally not what I expected in this adventure.
Dex a Chade but he never wanted to give himself over to the darkness. While alone as a chade he protected our Max while she was clueless in the world, even taking her energy he came to her aide.
Max knew some Chades could be helped... if only people listened and her pet Dex became her pet project to experiment on.
But things were set in motion before this fire Cali and Dex, and trust me, some interesting things are waiting ahead.
Our Max is feisty in protecting her family. And she one incredible woman.
Come join there journey in finding out how our Max is growing in strength, and how her paladins are learning to be her guards and her family as they learn from Max to see their world in a different light.
Montana Ash has this theme of redemption that I find very appealing. And her wit and humor makes reading her books a joy but also highly addictive. Great job.
And she gives us our next book to anticipate! Need it so soon!
I didn't think it was possible for a series to continue getting exponentially better, but it does. I think this may perhaps be my favorite of the Elemental Paladins series so far. So much intrigue and a deeply involved plot and no blunt cliffhanger.
Chade revolves around Cali and newcomer, 'Dex' who has a bit of a past you learn more about as the story goes on.
Dex is a chade; a sort of soul-sucking, energy vampire that somehow, Max has formed a congeniality with. She thinks he can be cured. Cali has the hots for him.
All in all a wild ride that's funny, amusing, entertaining and thought provoking. I LOVED it.
The only flaws...yes, there's some punctuation problems and I caught a spelling error. YES there is swearing, keep in mind the author is Aussie and they do not have the same hang ups as Americans do about swearing and sex. It's simply less taboo there than here so while it's much less than Max's book, 'Warden' it's still there and people need to just accept the wonderful, creative story and get over it.
Also as with punctuation and grammar errors...while someone who is good with English and such will notice it it does NOT detract from the story whatsoever. This is what you get with Indie authors because good copy-editing is INSANELY expensive. Big published writers can afford it. This is some of Ash's first work to my knowledge and she keeps getting better. I only mention it because I know people get uptight about it, and they shouldn't because this is the nature of the beast. And it's a fantastic beast indeed. <3 Can't wait for book four!!!!!
